Cucumber Trellis

My cucumbers were starting to invade my tomatoes and we couldn't have that. So I built a trellis from some 2x4's and sisal and leaned it against the fence. It is not bolted down in any way, but is fairly heavy and I don't imagine that a storm could shake it. I also tied up the cucumbers and hope that they will follow the lead and grow up the trellis now.

The Folly Garden Day 24

These are my two 7'x3.5' containers constructed of 1x6 rough-cut cedar. I don't remember the exact cost of the wood but I think it was around $150 (a bit high). Everything was planted from seed on March 22nd. The radishes are really thriving and should be ready to harvest in the next few days. The bell peppers were the last to germinate taking about 12-14 days and had me a bit worried. The stem of the brussel sprouts is very flimsy and the entire plant tends to collapse on itself after watering. Despite its flimsy nature the brussel sprouts have managed to weather a couple of storms with high winds and heavy rains. The squash plants in this photo are already huge. Keep in mind that each square is 21"x21". Spinach looks good but something has eaten two of the plants. The basil is tiny and will be moved to a pot soon. Over-watering!

I think I have falling prey to what now appears to be a common "beginner" mistake. Over-watering. I was always a little unsure of how much to water, but I knew that transplanted seedlings needed a good soaking to reduce the shock of being uprooted. Therefore I soaked everything until it pooled a little in between the trenches in the morning and then when I got home from work at 5 or 6. One pea plant, kale, calendula, squash, cucumbers, eggplant and tomatoes seem to have responded well to this abundance of water, and are growing nicely. However my various types of pepper plants haven't grown at all, even though their counter parts in the peat pots and seedling tray are really starting to take off. I decided to do a little research and I found out that peppers are supposed to be watered sparingly. Sparingly, what does that mean? The other items I looked up were pretty specific Peas - 1/2" a week Cucumbers - 1" a week Tomato transplants need 16 ounces of war
